The word Manipur literally means the 'jeweled town'. Manipur is a state located in the North eastern part of India, with the city of Imphal as its capital.It is bounded by the Indian states Nagaland , Mizoram and Assam to the north, south and west respectively and to it's east lies Asian country Myanmar.The state cover an area of 22,327sq.Km and has a population of 3 million.
The meitie ethnic group represents around 53% of the population of Manipur state followed by various Naga and Kukies tribes. The main language of the State is meitielon(also known as Manipuri).Tribals constitutes of 41% of the state and are distinguished by dialects and cultures and are often village based.Hinduism is the major religion in the state followed by Christianity including Islam,Sanamahism,Buddhism,Judaism etc.
Manipur is a home to many sports and the origin of Manipuri dance, and is credited with Introducing polo to Europeans.
The state flower and state animal of Manipur are Shirui Lily and Sangai respectively.
The Shirui Lily(Lelium Macklineae) is a rare Indian species of plants found only in the upper reaches of the Shirui hill ranges in the Ukhrul district of Manipur.The flower bloosom in spring specially May 15 to June 5. The plants are 3-9.1 meter in height .It has a pale blue pink petals,but when observed through a microscope has seven colours. The State animal Sangai ( Recervus eldi eldi) is an endemic and endangered subspecies of brown-antlered deer found only in Manipur.Its original natural habitat is the floating marshy grasslands of the Keibul Lamjao National Park.
Manipur is also famous for Loktak Lake and different species of orchids.
The report said that the North Eastern Region is estimated to have about 600 species of orchids, out of which almost 220 species are in Manipur. Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is famous for phumdis floating over it. The lake is located at Moirang in Manipur state.The etymology of Loktak is Lok for 'stream' and Tak for end'.
The festivals of Manipur are Lui-Ngai-ni,Ningol Chakauba,Shirui Lily festival,Yaoshang,gangai cheiraoba,Kang. Most of these festivals are celebrated as per the lunar calendar. And above all this people of Manipur also celebrates a unique festival"The Sangai Festival,which was inaugrated by president Ram Nath Kovind on 21-November-2017 .
The state also have the largest women's market in the world,'Ima Keithel', also known as Ima market or Nupi market.The Market is run exclusively by women in Imphal.It is a commercial centre and popular tourist attraction.It is located in Khawairamband Bazaar.It was established in 16th century and host around 5,000-6,000 women vendors who sell variety of products.
There is only one valley in Manipur known as Imphal Valley,rest of the parts are the hill areas . Jhum cultivation is widely practiced in all the hill areas inhabitated by different tribes.There are no big industries in the state,people earn their living through small works like firm,fisheries, poultry etc.And still happy.
The name Manipur rightly justifies the small and picturesque land with sites like Loktak lake and the Khongampat Orchidarium. Manipur is all about natural beauty.
